SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: Reading this post may cause concern about one's daughter becoming an alcoholic, including symptoms such as stress, heart palpitations, anxiety, and muppet arms. Mother discretion is advised.

I've been pondering for a while the idea of starting a separate cocktail blog. The idea's come up now and again, given how much I enjoy mixology, but for a long while I figured there wasn't much I could contribute - as you might guess, there's any number of drink-oriented blogs and websites out there.

But it's struck me recently that no matter how saturated a particular market, there's usually a niche or two that's not particularly well-served. And I seem to sit right smack in the middle of one of those niches - I often spend a fair amount of time looking for cocktail recipes that [a] don't require horrendously obscure/expensive ingredients, [b] are a nice balance between easy to make and complex enough to be interesting flavor-wise, and [c] include little touches (such as the lemon sugar in my favorite lemon drop recipe) that really make one's friends oooh and ahhh when you serve it to them. It's not that there's any shortage of such recipes online, just that it's hard to filter them out amongst the deluge of mediocre or bad ones ("Monkey Fart"? Really?). So maybe I should start a blog of my own, if only to collect the nifty/impressive recipes I've discovered/invented so far. Plus I can do ingredient reviews and such - I like reading DrinkHacker but a lot of his reviews are for single-malt scotches and such, which is cool, but doesn't really align with the whole "mixing" idea.

Of course, me being me, I'm not going to put something half-assed together, so there's going to be a fair amount of work involved, what with making up a layout I like, and figuring out how to make the posts look all pretty with pictures and things. Plus I'll have to find a camera, or figure out how to upload pictures from Brian's fancy one.

I guess the point of this post is that I'm trying to decide whether or not it'd be worth the bother. So, since I have the paid LJ time anyway, why not do up a poll?

First, "Muppet Arms" cracked me up. Point in your favor, for that one.

Second: Demographics options didn't suit my tastes. I'm relatively new to alcohol that tastes good enough to be worth drinking. I don't do many mixed drinks - I really appreciate a single drink (good wine, aged whiskey) that has complex layers of flavor. If it's anything that includes the instructions "Shoot it as fast as you can, so the taste doesn't..." then I'm not going to bother. But I've had a few really good mixed drinks that intrigued me, and so I'm interested in finding other stuff that tastes *good* - and, as you said, isn't made of exotic and outrageously expensive ingredients.

Hee, yeah, I got that from a friend. It's a nice metaphorical representation of the way certain topics make certain usually-rational people run around in circles going "OMG!" "ONOEZ!"

I was mostly being snarky with the demographics, although I'd probably lump you in the third category (it was meant to imply "I pay attention to what I drink and want it to be good quality" rather than to be taken literally).

ah, okay. That makes sense.

A friend of mine actually does the Grover's "NEAR!!!! FAR!!!!" complete with running towards and away from you while waving his skinny arms up over his head... if we ever got him a blue wooly sweater and bug-eyed glasses, he'd be a shoe-in. (Yes, I have live-action muppets for friends.)
