Been an absolutely lovely day for me. I'm working Tuesday through Saturday at the clinic this month, so this is the one day a week Brian and I get to spend together. Even though we haven't been doing anything "special", it's still been one of the nicest days I've had lately. (Admittedly, a lot of that is because over this last week I've gotten to the point where my teeth only start hurting enough to need ibuprofen once every couple of days, rather than every three to four hours.)

I've been going on a bit of a baking binge, lately - I made a couple of batches of muffins from mixes that I'd bought. However, my funds ran out before my enthusiasm, so I decided to try making a batch from scratch, and trawled the Internet for a basic muffin recipe. Unfortunately, the one I tried turned out to be a bit too basic - it had almost no flavor, and the dough was far too dry. (Rock hard muffins - bleargh!) Fortunately, I remembered that Brian's mother Julie had given us her updated copy of The Joy of Cooking, so I looked up a few muffin recipes and tried one this morning. I have since come to the conclusion that carrot muffins, almost sweet enough to qualify as carrot cake, fresh from the oven and bursting with steam and golden raisins are one of the divine reasons for incarnating.

It turned out to be an excellent day for cooking; around noon, Brian started a beef stew to go over mashed potatoes which, although it took nearly three hours to cook, was probably the tastiest and most filling meal I'd had since leaving my mother's that wasn't done by a resturant.

Aside from adventures of the culinary persuasion, we spent our day doing relatively little - resting, playing video games, and in my case, reading Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. I found it rather amusing that, as apathetic a front Brian had put up about wanting to read it, he snatched it up within ten minutes of my finishing the last page.

Apparently the various giggles and groans (and, eventually, tears) I emitted while reading it intrigued him somewhat...as probably did the amusing bits I read to him.

In any case, it's been a lovely and thoroughly relaxing day. I honestly don't know when I've felt happier or more contented in the last couple of months.
